Episode Description:
Coming up this week on Arts.21 - the cultural magazine from the heart of Europe --- we meet artists Taryn Simon from the United States and Benjamin Bergmann from Munich. We also talk to Daniel Libeskind, the architect of the new Museum of Military History in Dresden, and we drop by Leipzig's annual festival for documentary and animated films, where the focus this year is on the Arab Spring.
THE DETAILS
Arab Spring Turns Into Autumn - The Documentary Film Festival in Leipzig
Before their revolutions earlier this year, Egypt and Tunisia were paralyzed by repression and stagnation. But then everything changed. The DOK documentary film festival in Leipzig is screening films about the Arab Spring, its causes and its effects, fresh from the editing suites. And many of them, created by Egyptian and Tunisian filmmakers, show what a fragile state these countries are still in.
A Shard Through the Heart - Daniel Libeskind on Architecture and Memories
The facade looks as if it has been struck and violently divided in half - architect Daniel Libeskind has driven a pointed steel and glass shard right through the Museum of Military History in Dresden. We met up with him in New York to talk about Ground Zero, his work in Germany and the relationship between architecture and memories.
Blood Lines - A Photo Series in the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin
US artist Taryn Simon has documented the stories of individuals who were wrongly sentenced to death or life sentences. Over the past four years, she has traveled around the world researching and recording bloodlines and their related stories.
Popcorn - The Sculptor Benjamin Bergmann
A room slowly filling up with popcorn, and a megaphone that visitors can actually climb into: German artist Benjamin Bergmann is puzzling and playful - like his rollercoaster made of wooden slats and fluorescent tubes. An artist with a twinkle in his eye.
