Episode Description:

Demetra McBride, Director, Climate Change and Sustainability, County of Santa Clara, shares her vision about the importance of sustainability in the County and beyond. The San Francisco Bay Area and the birthplace of Silicon Valley are the home of Apple, Adobe, Google, Tesla and HP along with technology hubs including Palo Alto and San Jose. Demetra invites artist Michael Killen to share his inspiration for making the painting "Sustainability" (24 x 5 feet). Offline she says, "It is fitting that an artist from Silicon Valley recognized the importance of the zeitgeist sustainability and interpreted it on canvas?and in a way that will motivate all of us transform our economy to a clean and renewable one."

Michael credits Steve Hipskind, Chief, Earth Science Division, NASA Ames, for prompting him to make the painting "Sustainability." Steve recommended that NASA commission him to make a painting for NASA's new building Sustainability Base. Michael also credits Steve Zornetzer, Associate Center Director, NASA Ames, who fought hard to assure the creation of Sustainablity Base and who supported Michael's vision to make an important painting that would increase awareness about the vitality of sustainability.
