Episode Description:
A very compelling, intriguing and inspiring show where Kari discusses her own 25+ year struggle with an eating disorder and shares her experiences with fellow recovered co-hort Gail Schoenbach. As a result of her recovery and desire to raise awareness Gail began the F.R.E.E.D. Foundation which is an organization that lobby's in Washington D.C. to promote better health care coverage for eating disorder sufferers. Both alumni from The Renfrew Center, a facility that specializes in eating disorder treatment, as well as Today Show guests who discussed their mid-life eating disorders, Gail and Kari candidly discuss the low points of their respective eating disorders and their eventual triumphant recoveries.
This show will help to encourage women (and men) who suffer from eating disorders and negative body images that they are not alone and to convey that recovery IS possible and infinitely better than living in this insidious disease. Research indicates that eating disorder treatment centers have seen as much as a 42% increase of middle aged women attending their programs. It is critical that as much information about women's health and positive body image is publicized in an effort to protect and promote women's natural body types versus perpetuating the notion that 'thin is in' which is incredibly damaging and destructive to all women alike.
