Bulgaria - Practicing the World's Oldest Profession in Germany - The Stolipinovo district of Plovdiv, Bulgaria, is said to have one of the biggest concentrations of Roma people in the Balkans. For many of the community's women, the only way to earn a living is to go to Germany and work as a prostitute.

Greece: Helping a Struggling Country Help Itself - They say necessity is the mother of invention. This spring in northern Greece, farmers began selling potatoes directly to consumers, bypassing wholesalers. The potato farmers' initiative is catching on. Now honey, olive oil, beans and rice are also being sold directly for prices much lower than in the shops. It's a boon for consumers, who have less and less money available as government austerity measures begin to bite. The new system also works for the farmers, who are earning more for their products.

France: Temporary Grandmother - Some 180,000 students look for accommodation in Paris each year. Many of them are opting to room with older Parisians, rather than pay for an overpriced apartment of their own. The initiative PariSolidaire came up with the idea for an intergenerational housing project. This was how Assane Nogm from Senegal found an affordable place to live in Paris.

Austria: Cross Carriage Drivers - Horse-drawn cabs are as important a tradition at the square in front of St. Steven's Cathedral as the waltz is to Vienna. But now, new regulations on the humane treatment of the horses are leading to changes.

Netherlands: The anti-toll - Instead of collecting tolls, some Dutch regions reward drivers who don’t use the highways. And drivers who stick to off-peak hours also cash in. Commuters can earn up to 100 euros a month - for not driving.
