Please note both the English and Spanish versions of European Journal will be taking an 11 week hiatus during the Summer. Due to the fact that many episodes produced by Deutsche Welle during the Summer months are programs repeated from earlier in the year, it makes little sense for us to re-post programs that are already available on PegMedia. PegMedia members are invited to use repeat broadcasts of the program which are available on this page. If you have previous programs already downloaded we would ask you use these programs first. This will save us the costs we pay for each download. We will return on September 3rd with all new programming.

European Journal is now available on PegMedia.org in both English and Spanish! Each week will have two files, one in English labelled "European Journal" and one in Spanish labelled "Europa Semanal" in the title.

Coming up this week on European Journal - the news magazine from Brussels ---

Italy: Living in an Earthquake Zone - Northern Italy has been struck by severe earthquakes. The grief over the dead and injured is mixed with the dread of aftershocks. The damage runs into billions of euros. Worst affected is the region around Modena, where virtually all the factories have been destroyed. Many of them were never built to withstand a quake. For now, tens of thousands are without jobs. The people of northern Italy will generally roll up their sleeves and work hard rather that rely on state assistance. But the second quake in just nine days has left many people demoralized. Experts are warning of the possibility of yet more tremblors.

Greece: the Church and Its Assets - As much as the Greek people have had to sacrifice to the crisis, the assets of the Orthodox Church remain untouched - as does the Church's influence on the political process. The Church's assets are just as untouchable as ever. Fully aware of the great influence the priests exercise on popular opinion, no official would dare make an issue of it. The Church owns some 130,000 hectares, making it Greece's second largest land-owner. But no outsider knows exactly how much revenue it takes in. The state pays the salaries of the 10,000-some priests and bishops, budgeting some 220 million euros a year for the Church.

Switzerland: French Tax Refugees - The plans of the new French President Francois Hollande for tax reforms are spreading panic among the Grande Nation's well-to-do citizens - and benefitting Switzerland. Top-earning and well-to-do French are facing a possible maximum tax rate of 75% as well as higher inheritance and interest taxes. For months now, well-connected tax advisors in Switzerland have been observing an unusually high influx of French clients to the country's French-speaking areas. And the demand for their services is brisk. France's upcoming parliamentary elections may well trigger another wave of refugees - much to the delight of advisors and real estate agents.

Poland: Citta the Soothsayer - Paul the Octopus has found a worthy successor. It is Citta the Elephant, the Cracow Zoo's largest inhabitant, who will be predicting the winner of the Euro 2012 soccer tournament. For important matches, Citta will make the winning pick by choosing between two marked apples that represent the two teams. She'll put her abilities to test for all of Poland's matches, the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and the deciding match. She was tapped for the job after correctly predicting the result of the UEFA Champions League final, where she unhesitatingly sniffed out the apple painted in Chelsea colors.
