WPN003c - Irrigation Threatening Salmon

Irrigation Diversions threatens Columbia River Salmon
Once the world’s greatest salmon river, the Columbia River is home to salmon facing extinction.
One ongoing threat is the US Bureau of Reclamation that, along with the Washington Dept of Ecology, is pushing to divert ever more water for irrigation at the world’s 5th largest dam:  Grand Coulee Dam.
Economic folly shelved the Bureau’s proposals in the 1980s.  Meanwhile irrigators placed thousands of illegal wells, mining the ancient groundwaters -- despite decades of warnings.
The Bureau and Washington State have proposed diverting more Columbia River water in a project that could cost taxpayers billions.   Columbia River advocates are challenging the federal and state agencies to protect the river and its runs of salmon.
