Episode Description:
"A Day in the Sun" documentary highlights the emergence of the arts as an economic and community development strategy in York, Pennsylvania.
York is situated at the "crossroads of America," near many of the busy east coast population centers (Baltimore, D.C., Philadelphia, NYC). This film follows the efforts among many to redefine the once ailing industrial town as an arts mecca, opening doors to artists looking for cheap and plentiful space, and, of course, the businesses to follow. Nationwide, the Arts have become a hot commodity for policy makers, politicians and private developers as a viable strategy for boosting local economies. This is one story that has implications for any place looking to harness the arts to improve its community.
A Day in the Sun follows York as it is selected to host the 2009 Governor's Arts Awards, only to have its hopes dashed amidst one of the worst budget crises in PA history. Years of effort, both top-down and grassroots, hang in the balance. Woven within this drama are the moving stories of 5 artists who have discovered this small, but unique city and strive to build a place to work, live and thrive. Together these stories show what it means to place the Arts at center of one city's desire to change.
