Episode Description:

Stories of passion, bloodshed and death shape this thrilling time in English history.

The country must deal with power struggles between the king and Parliament, but England has other, bigger problems, as plague sweeps across the land, killing one third of the population. In the 12th century, the English started demanding more of their kings, nobles, and even popes. The nobles are not happy with the Magna Carta, as it poses limits on their power, as well as the king's. Society changes as a result of the devastation, and a middle class emerges for the first time. A series of poor rulers who abuse power and overtax the people leads to a landmark case in which, for the first time since Anglo Saxon days, the people evaluate the king and impeach him. Henry V, a strong and charismatic leader, comes to the throne, and increases England's power by invading and winning France.
