Episode Description:

In the 1600's the Stewarts, starting with King James I, take the British throne, and control of both England and Scotland.

While previous rulers took over the Church - and its wealth - the Stewarts are the first to claim the "divine right of kings." Join historian Susan Bottom to explore this memorable time in Turning Points in British History when England comes under Scottish rule and the Puritans emerge to exhibit considerable influence on government and the Church. Religious differences widen under King Charles, who has a nasty habit of dissolving Parliament whenever he doesn't agree with them. The situation finally erupts in civil war, leaving the country in shambles and the king in shackles.
