Panel 3 on Prison Education held at the Conference at Princeton University on Saturday, April 5, 2014 The event was a 2 day conference on April 4-5, of 2014 organized by the Students for Prison Education and Reform (SPEAR) hosted "Building a New Criminal Justice: Mobilizing Students for Reform," http://pace.princeton.edu/features/2014/03/spear-conference-building-new... a conference at Princeton University. The conference enabled students to discuss how to "build and transition to a new system of criminal justice that prioritizes effectiveness, fairness, and humanity."
The first speaker was Fred Patrick who joined Vera http://www.vera.org/ in July 2012 as the project director of the Pathways from Prison to Postsecondary Education Project. In 2015, he was named director of the Center on Sentencing and Corrections. He came to Vera from a career in public service in New York City where he served as Deputy Commissioner for Planning and Programs at the NYC Department of Correction, Commissioner of the NYC Juvenile Justice Department, and NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Community Affairs. Most recently, Fred served in executive positions at the Fortune Society, a reentry services organization, and NADAP, an agency providing workforce development and behavioral health services. He also served as a faculty member at John Jay College of Criminal Justice for several years.

The second speaker was Max Kenner who is the founder and Executive Director of the Bard Prison Initiative http://bpi.bard.edu/who-we-are/ He conceived of and created the Bard Prison Initiative as a student volunteer organization when he was an undergraduate at Bard College in 1999. After gaining the support of the College and cooperation of the New York State Department of Correctional Services, he has overseen the growth of the program into a credit-bearing and, subsequently, degree-granting program in 2001. In addition to organization management and program design for BPI, Kenner is responsible for fundraising and management of relations with New York State and the Department of Correctional Services.
