Born and brought up in San Francisco Bay area Khan was surrounded by music and musical legends like his fatehr Ali Akbar Khan, The Grateful Dead, Santana, Zakir Hussain, Jai Uttal and others.

How does Khan combine his Indian Classical music with hip-hop? His father Ali Akbar Khan established an Indian musical school in Berkeley in the 1960s and went on to influence The Grateful Dead. Khan shares how his grandfather's style of Indian classical music is the one that became popular in the West through his disciple Ravi Shankar and his father Ali Akbar Khan.
