Episode Description:

There is always a fair amount of mystery that surrounds old places. Who lived here? What did they do? How did they live? Uncovering the answers to those questions requires a whole set of skills most of us have never considered. Well, today, we will consider those questions as Along the Blackstone’s Episode #25 travels to Boston to investigate an on-going archaeology dig behind the Abriel Smith School on Beacon Hill, part of the Boston African American National Historic Site. Then we’ll head out to rural Douglas, Massachusetts to see what an 1835 store, the Jencks Store, would look like and in each case we will marry the technical and story-telling skills of the National Park Service to the interests of a local museum and historical society. There is a lot to learn from these “connected” places for, while both were built in 1835, each one was the center of their community.
