Episode Description:

America’s journey towards industrialization is not complete without its companion story of America’s transportation revolution – for one grew out of the other. At the beginning of the 1800’s, American farmers were still sending their produce to market using the same technology as the farmers did in the age of Caesar. Post roads and turnpikes, followed by canals, then railroads created a faster moving system of moving goods to market, but where are they today? Join us as Along the Blackstone’s Episode #58 turns us into detectives as we explore the hidden Blackstone Canal. Using the chief aid, the 1828 As-Built Blackstone Canal Map, drawn by engineer Edward Phelps, we will see what artifacts remain of the historic canal and explain why it was so important to the early developing country. This is the first episode of 5 on the canal, starting in Providence, RI.
