Episode Description:

This documentary traces the history of the Laconia State School, Laconia, New Hampshire, from its initial beginnings as the New Hampshire School for the Feebleminded in the early 1900s until its closure in 1991.

The purpose is to provide a thought-provoking and inspirational story that examines the social values and cultural ideals of the 20th century relative to individuals who are labeled feebleminded, deficient, and idiots and to their families who sought to care for them in a way society dictated. The video includes interviews with former residents of the institution, and people who worked at the institution, along with previous film footage, and extensive collection of photos, newspaper articles, letters and state documents.
