Long an annual local tradition, the Wakefield Independence Day Parade is the largest July Fourth parade in Massachusetts and the second largest in the New England region (behind the parade in Bristol, Rhode Island).It has also been reported that it is the eighth largest in the U.S. Each year, this parade features the best in award-winning drum corps from around the U.S.
The 2009 parade theme was "A Salute to America's Patriots" and featured units from around the U.S., such as the Baltimore Police Band, Lake City Band (Lake City, Minnesota), Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps, Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps, Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps, Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps, Spirit of America of Orleans, Massachusetts, Citations, and the nationally reknowned Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps (formerly Cadets of Bergen County). Local favorites include Dan Clark ("the Singing State Trooper"), television host Rex Trailer, Bunker Hill Bagpipe Band, Colonel Bailey's Second Massachusetts Regiment, Tony Barrie Band, and many other groups and floats.
